Triple Test

What is TRIPLE Test?

It is the testing of Mother’s blood during pregnancy to learn the probability for certain birth defects like Down’s syndrome and Spina Bifida.

What are these diseases?

These are explained in the next section.

Where it is recommended ?

It is a part of routine testing in medical care of pregnant women of all ages. It is now accepted worldwide as a routine procedure.

When during the pregnancy triple test is done?

It is done between 14 to 20 weeks. It is generally not advised after 21 weeks.

What does the TRIPLE test measure?

Actually three tests are studied. The results are subjected to complex evaluation through a sophisticated software. In simple terms, if this probability is high, result is termed as abnormal.

Does an abnormal test result mean genetic disease in the child ?

NO. The test does not diagnose the defect, it merely indicates higher risk. It has to be followed up by diagnostic tests if abnormal.

Does negative test exclude the diagnosis?

NO. False negative rate is around 5 percent.

Then what are the benefits of Triple test?

For the great majority of cases, it provides the reassurance that these genetic abnormalities are highly unlikely. It also provides more information whether to do further studies for specific genetic abnormality.
